Understanding seller and buyer responsibilities at each trade term

Ex Works

Seller makes goods available at their premises. Buyer bears all costs and risks from that point.

FOB

Free On Board

Seller delivers goods on board the vessel at the port of shipment. Risk transfers when goods are on board.

CFR

Cost and Freight

Seller pays freight to destination port. But risk transfers at origin port when loaded on vessel.

CIF

Cost, Insurance and Freight

Like CFR but seller also provides minimum insurance. Most common for sea freight.

DAP

Delivered at Place

Seller delivers goods to buyer's named place, ready for unloading. Import clearance is buyer's responsibility.

DDP

Delivered Duty Paid

Seller bears ALL costs and risks including import duties and taxes. Maximum seller obligation.
